Why Can the Internet Never be Secure?

June 7, 2017 Posted in Privacy News by No Comments

The internet is one of the best tools available to mankind right now. Information about anything you can think of can be obtained with just the click of a button. All the music in the world can be carried on your mobile device. In fact, we could watch the launch and the landing of the reusable Space X rocket, live on YouTube. It is remarkable to see how much we have progressed over the past few years.

Technology has advanced so far that we now can connect our TVs, toasters, trash cans, and pretty much everything else in the world to the internet. However, with great power comes great responsibility.

Increasing number of cyber attacks

As the number of devices getting connected to the internet is increasing on a daily basis, the risk of facing cyber attacks also increases.

For example, Yahoo recently revealed that 500 million accounts got attacked. Malware such as Mirai, BrickerBot, Hummingbad and Ztorg to name a few are running rampant online. If you have been following the news closely, WannaCry, a new ransomware caused the most severe attack in 2017. Its impact on the world is simply mind-blowing. Over 200,000 devices got infected with the malware and its effects can be felt in over 150 countries. Healthcare facilities got affected the most as it infected a large number of medical devices. In fact, doctors even had to put surgeries on hold.

Increased spending

According to a report by Cybersecurity Ventures, the cost of global cyber crime is expected to exceed $6 trillion by the year 2021. This fact is alarming as this figure is more than the expected GDP of UK and Germany combined. Companies all over the world are spending large sums of money to stop cyber attacks.

However, hackers are becoming smarter. They have increased fundings and access to more powerful tools that can disrupt the internet. They can hack into any device which is connected to the internet and take control. To put things into perspective, in 2015, hackers remotely killed a jeep on the highway. As we are moving towards a driverless future, news like this really scares us.

Stay safe with a VPN

A Virtual Private Network or VPN for short is one of the best tools we have at the moment that can protect our identity while making it safe to surf the internet. By using a VPN, you remain anonymous and your data gets encrypted before it goes through the internet. This not only makes it harder for hackers to gain access, it acts as a deterrent. If you really want to stay safe in the insecure internet world of today, use a VPN.
