It is common knowledge that virtual private networks (VPNs) can be used to access geo-blocked content. Many people these days use VPN simply because most VPNs have servers across the world and the service allows you to choose a server in a country where a new product or service has been launched or is restricted to. Your actual IP address remains hidden and only the IP address of the server that you choose is visible.
There are quite a few advantages. Here are a few.
Advantages of using VPN to access geo-blocked/ restricted content
For example, a new game has been launched only in Canada and the USA and you are based in Germany. If you are using a decent VPN service, most probably you will be able to access a server in either of these two countries. Now, you can access and play the games the way anyone based in the USA or Canada would. One well known example is that of people from countries outside the USA accessing Netflix content which is not available in their own countries.
Now, if you are based in the USA and you want to buy a product say the latest Office 365 software, you can use your VPN mask your identity and buy the same software from India or say China for a fraction of what you have to pay in the US.
However, you will have to choose your VPN service provider meticulously. Choose one which doesn’t have too much latency and throttle and also ensure that it is 256-bit SSL secured i.e. encrypted. This is important because if your server is geographically separated by a long distance from your device, there will be some loss in speed and if there is more throttle, it would be almost impossible to access some content especially a video or live streaming because of uninterrupted buffering.
Why do you need to be circumspect when bypassing geo-restrictions?
Although VPNs allow you to access information or content from almost any place in the world by choosing the nearest server, you should be careful. For example, you buy something in the UK even though you are located in the USA. But, then you forget to choose a US-based server and continue carrying out transactions using the UK-based server.
What may happen? You might see that when the bill arrives, a VAT or some other taxes have been levied on your purchase because you had been using a UK-based server even though there is no VAT in the US. This is a common but completely avoidable mistake.
Conclusion
A VPN service not only allows you to bypass and access blocked content in other countries or allows you to buy something cheap, it also gives you will a tunnel-shaped passage for secured transmission of data.
