TorGuard Review

Welcome to our TorGuard review, where we take a closer look at a solid VPN offering. Note: Despite the name, TorGuard is not related to the Tor (The Onion Router) Project.

For those new to the world of online security, a VPN is a service that creates an encrypted tunnel between your computer and the service’s servers, securing your connection against spying and theft, and also helping to bypass censorship and filtering. Go here (http://www.australianvpn.com.au/what-is-a-vpn/) for more information about what a VPN is and what it can do for you.

Aussie Servers? You betcha.

TorGuard VPN has servers based in Australia, which is nice for those who don’t want to pay in extra ping for their online security. TorGuard is a service that was started specifically to allow torrent users to maintain their privacy while downloading via torrents, and so their support for torrents and P2P is stellar.

TorGuard Pricing

TorGuard ReviewTorGuard’s pricing structure is a bit complicated and leans toward the expensive. First off, they offer an Anonymous Proxy for US$5.95/month. This offering will secure your browser – and only your browser, mind! – against outside threats in the same way that a VPN secures all traffic from your computer.

Secondly, they offer an Anonymous Email service for US$6.95/month. This service will provide you with secure, unlimited mail storage. You can get the Anonymous Email service for free but with only 10mb of mail storage it hardly seems worth the effort.

The third offering is their Anonymous VPN, for $9.99/month. Featuring unlimited speeds and bandwidth, over 1 600 servers, five simultaneous connections and a Stealth VPN service that prevents your VPN from being detected, it’s really not a bad deal. They also throw in a free license for Sparklabs’ Viscosity OpenVPN client.

We’ve included this handy pricing table in our TorGuard Review to assist you in the case you want to purchase it!

Features

They also have an Anonymous Bundle, which has a list of customizable options such as a Dedicated IP, the option to add more simultaneous connections onto the five that are already included, a DDOS-protected IP, and upgrades to a premium network that’s only available in the US. The price on this one varies significantly depending on the options chosen. The purchasing process seemed unnecessarily complicated, but that can be worked around with patience. TorGuard accepts a wide variety of payment options, including VISA, Paypal, WebMoney, Bitcoin and MasterCard.

Keep in mind that the prices are quoted in US dollars and your bill may change with the exchange rate.

During TorGuard review testing, Torguard’s impact on download speed and ping was erratic, sometimes much higher than the average and sometimes much lower. Mostly, however, it was higher, and showed dramatically increased latency, which will be very important for gamers to note.

Software

They have apps for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. Their apps are clunky and not that pretty, and reportedly have difficulty disconnecting and connecting to servers, but they get the job done.

As a rule, we do not focus overmuch on the VPNs’ websites. However in this case, TorGuard’s website rates a special mention. The website looks smooth enough, but under the slick façade it is surprisingly difficult to get any actual information out of it. The process of buying the service is unnecessarily complex, and vital information is hidden in tiny links at the bottom of the page.

Some of their features include:

  • Unlimited speed and Bandwidth. They won’t throttle or limit your speed.
  • Multi-protocol support. They support OpenVPN (via Viscosity), SSTP, S2TP, and IPSec.
  • Stealth VPN. Bypass Deep Packet Inspection with TorGuard’s stealth connections, which are guaranteed to protect your data anywhere in the world.
  • Kill Switch. TorGuard’s apps will shut down apps on their Kill List if the VPN service is interrupted, preventing you from exposing your data on unsecured connections.
  • 1 600 servers in 50+ countries.
  • Zero-logging policy. TorGuard does not keep any traffic or usage logs from the VPN or the Proxy service. They mention, however, that they may use their users’ email addresses (if entered on their website) to send information regarding products and services.

In the end, we conclude that TorGuard is just what it says on the tin – a solid VPN for people who want to make use of torrents and P2P services. Prices are a bit on the high end for a VPN, and except for its Stealth VPN service, doesn’t offer anything to get really excited over.
