Could The Us Election Be Hacked?

November 14, 2016 Posted in VPN Education by No Comments

There has been a growing number of debates in the US which center around the question of whether the US elections can be hacked or not. If reports are to be believed, Russian hackers may very well try or may have already tried to hack the upcoming elections. Government officials, including Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama, and voters have expressed concern over this issue. As the election date draws nearer, the fear of hacking looms largely over American voters and cyber-security experts.

The reason for worry

The Obama administration has accused Russia of hacking into the Democratic National Committee ever since private emails were leaked online. They even indicated that some online election rolls might be influenced by Russian servers. Some have even talked about the possible rigging of the electronic voting machine software to favor one candidate over the other. Another reason for worry is the inaugural of the online voting system which might prove more to be a bane than a boon. In certain cases, voting results are transferred over Wifi rather than have them taken physically to the tally site. This might expose the results to hacking and intelligence officials have expressed concern on this matter.

The truth

But officials and cyber experts from the current US presidential elections are skeptical of this theory. Government officials have said that it is impossible for Russia or any other country for that matter to hack into the election. The entire process is too decentralized and offline for hackers to steal data. As for the electronic voting machines being rigged, one must be close to the machine to alternate it in any way. Many officials feel that internet voting is a bad idea and should be secured tightly. But since internet voting only caters to a small percentage of military families and Americans living outside the US, it is not a big issue. The bigger issue could be with online registration for voters. Hacking into online registration databases could lead to chaos and cause a disruption in American election infrastructure. Several cyber-security experts have brushed aside this idea and have said that it could all be part of a psychological game to slow down the election process. Regardless of Trump supporters being already convinced that the votes won’t be counted properly, the US elections this year is expected to be as safe as they used to be.
