Why Router-Level VPN?
Installing VPN on your router protects your entire household:
✓ Advantages
- Every device on WiFi gets VPN protection (no app needed)
- Protect devices that don't support VPN apps (smart TVs, old devices)
- No VPN app drain on device battery
- Better for streaming (smart TV, Fire Stick, gaming consoles)
- One setup, covers everyone
✗ Disadvantages
- More complex setup (but this guide makes it easy)
- Slight speed reduction (10-20%) for all devices
- Requires router with VPN support or custom firmware
- Technical support limited for some routers
Who should use router VPN? Anyone with a smart TV, Fire Stick, gaming console, or multiple devices. Anyone who wants passive protection.
Compatible Routers
GL.iNet (Best for Beginners)
GL.iNet makes routers specifically designed for VPN. Perfect for Australians:
Popular models:
- GL-AX1800 — Best for most homes, WiFi 6, ~$150 AUD
- GL-MT3000 — Budget option, basic WiFi, ~$100 AUD
- GL-B2200 — Dual band, good for larger homes, ~$130 AUD
All include WireGuard & OpenVPN built-in. No firmware flashing needed. Designed for VPN from the ground up.
ASUS Routers
Many ASUS routers support VPN natively. Check your model supports OpenVPN or WireGuard.
Check compatibility:
Visit asus.com → Find your router model → Check specs for "VPN" support
Models like RT-AX88U, RT-AX3000, RT-AX1800 typically support VPN.
TP-Link & Other Brands
Most TP-Link routers don't support VPN natively. Avoid unless you're comfortable with custom firmware.
OpenWrt/DD-WRT (Advanced)
Custom firmware that turns any router into a VPN router. Requires technical knowledge.
⚠ For advanced users only. Installation can brick your router if done wrong. Not recommended for beginners.
GL.iNet Router Setup (Easiest)
Step 1: Unbox & Power On
- Unpack GL.iNet router
- Connect power cable
- Wait for lights to stabilize (2-3 minutes)
Step 2: Connect to WiFi
From your phone/computer:
- Open WiFi networks
- Find "GL-XXXX" (default GL.iNet network)
- Connect (default password usually on router bottom: "goodlife")
- Browser automatically opens admin panel (or visit 192.168.8.1)
Step 3: Login to Admin Panel
Default credentials:
Username: root
Password: goodlife
Click Login
Step 4: Configure WiFi Name (Optional)
Left panel → "Wireless" → Change "WiFi Name" to whatever you want (e.g., "MyHome") → Set strong password → Save
Step 5: Add Your VPN
This is the important bit:
- Left panel → "VPN" → "OpenVPN Client"
- Your VPN Provider: Go to your VPN provider's website (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, etc.). Download their OpenVPN config files or get WireGuard config.
- Upload Config: In GL.iNet panel, click "Choose File" and upload the VPN config file
- Enter Credentials: Enter your VPN username and password (from your VPN account)
- Select Server: Choose an Australian server (Sydney recommended)
- Connect: Click "Connect" button
- Verify: Status should show "Connected" (green light)
Step 6: Auto-Connect
Go "VPN" → Check "Auto-Connect" → Save. Router will reconnect if VPN drops.
Step 7: Test
- Disconnect from admin panel
- Connect your phone/computer to the new WiFi name you set
- Visit whatismyipaddress.com
- IP should show Australian location (not your real location)
- Done! All devices on this WiFi now use VPN
ASUS Router Setup
Note: ASUS router VPN setup varies by model. These are general steps for RT-AX88U/RT-AX3000. Check your specific model's manual.

Open browser → Type router IP (usually 192.168.1.1) → Default: admin/admin
Step 2: Navigate to VPN
Left panel → "Advanced Settings" → "VPN" → "VPN Client" → Select OpenVPN
Step 3: Upload VPN Config
- Download OpenVPN config from your VPN provider
- Click "Upload VPN config file"
- Select the .ovpn file
- Enter VPN username and password
Step 4: Connect
Click "Connect" → Wait for status to show "Connected" → All devices now protected
Performance Tips & Troubleshooting
VPN is Slow
Solutions:
- Switch to closer Australian server (Sydney)
- Try WireGuard protocol instead of OpenVPN (faster)
- Restart router
- Check if your internet speed (non-VPN) is the issue
VPN Keeps Disconnecting
- Enable "Auto-Connect" in VPN settings
- Try different Australian server
- Check VPN account is active (not expired)
- Restart router
Streaming Not Working Through Router VPN
- Some streaming services actively block VPN routers
- Try different Australian server
- Try different protocol (OpenVPN → WireGuard)
- Restart router and streaming device
- Some services (Foxtel) may not work; use device-level VPN instead
Can I Use VPN on Router + VPN on Device?
Yes, but: Not recommended. Double-VPN is slower and doesn't add much security benefit. If you need it, understand it will be significantly slower.
WireGuard vs OpenVPN on Router
WireGuard:
Faster, uses less CPU, better for router. Use if your VPN supports it.
OpenVPN:
More compatible, widely supported. Use if WireGuard not available.
Bandwidth Requirements by Device
Browsing: 1-2 Mbps
Streaming HD (720p): 5-10 Mbps
Streaming 4K: 25+ Mbps
Gaming: 5+ Mbps (latency more important)
Router VPN adds 10-20% overhead. So 100 Mbps connection → ~80-90 Mbps through VPN.
Next Steps
